This pensione occupies a landmark Renaissance palazzo on one of the city's great squares. While you can live like the nobles of yore in rooms with 4.6m (15-ft.) ceilings whose 3m (10-ft.) windows and oversize antique furniture are proportionately appropriate, the placement on the square makes for a boisterous evening and service is reflective of its denomination as a pensione. Room no. 9 sleeps five people and offers a Duomo view from its bathroom window; room B is a double with a fantastic cityscape out the window. On closer inspection, you'll see that the resident cats have left their mark on common-area sofas, and everything seems a bit ramshackle and musty. But that seems to be the point. The highlight is the monumental roofed veranda where Mimmo, the English-speaking manager, oversees breakfast and encourages brown-bag lunches and the chance to relax and drink in the views.
