Palazzo Antellesi Review

Many people passing through Piazza Santa Croce notice Giovanni di Ser Giovanni's 1620 graffiti frescoes on the overhanging facade of no. 21, but few realize they can actually stay there. The 16th-century palazzo is owned by Signora Piccolomini, who rents out truly extravagant apartments to anyone who has dreamed of lying in bed next to a roaring fire under a 17th-century frescoed ceiling (the Granduca, which sleeps two or three) or sipping tea in a living room surrounded by trompe l'oeil Roman ruins with a 16th-century wood ceiling above (the Donatello, which sleeps six to eight). Even in the more standard rooms the furnishings are tasteful, with wicker, wood, or wrought-iron bed frames; potted plants; and the occasional 18th-century inlaid wood dresser to go with the plush couches and chairs. Author R. W. B. Lewis wrote about the Antellesi in the final chapter of The City of Florence.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
