Despite its bleak location in an unassuming storefront, Darrel & Oliver's Cafe Maxx is one of the best restaurants in Broward County. When it opened in 1984, it was the first restaurant to have an open kitchen, and what a stir that caused! Now, instead of the kitchen, the marvel is what comes out of it. Consider ancho-rubbed swordfish with corn and succotash, conch fritters, and avocado salsa; sweet-onion-crusted yellowtail snapper with Madeira sauce; or blue cheese and pine nut-crusted rack of lamb. Yum. But save room for dessert -- the deep dish Bourbon pecan pie or Bing cherry bread pudding are just two of many diet- and mind-blowing options.
