The "Little Elephant's Corner" is the best place to stay in the heart of Franschhoek village -- a warm, sociable, good-value guesthouse within easy walking distance of the main road, but set at the edge of a classic ornamental garden in the town's old Mission House. An Italian lady with a keen sense of style and infinite charm as a hostess, Renata is another European who came to Franschhoek, fell in love, and stayed. This is her second guesthouse here; as she cut her teeth on a smaller project, she's given all the rooms a beautiful overhaul and turned the entire place into a classy boutique guesthouse using original antiques, select artworks, and immaculate bedrooms. Standard "comfort" and courtyard rooms are just fine, but there are a couple of special spaces, such as the Sundeck Jacuzzi suite, that are really worth spending a little extra on. With its healthful-but-decadent high tea, small-but-excellent restaurant showcasing one of Franschhoek's blossoming culinary talents, and all-around understanding of what traditional hospitality is all about, I cannot recommend this budget-sensitive residence highly enough.
