Frommer's Review
Situated on 27 hillside acres overlooking the falls of the Rappahannock River, Belmont began as an 18th-century farmhouse (the central six rooms of the house date to the 1790s) and was enlarged to a 22-room estate by a later owner. Although the house has historic attributes, its fame comes from being furnished with the art treasures, family heirlooms, and European antiques of famed American artist Gari Melchers, who lived here from 1916 until his death in 1932. His wife, Corinne, gave Belmont to the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1955. In addition to Melchers's own works, there are many wonderful paintings in the house -- a watercolor sketch by Jan Bruegel, 19th-century paintings by Morisot, and works by Rodin. It'll take about an hour to see the orientation video and take a guided tour of the house. You can explore the gardens and studio on your own. Call for a schedule of special exhibitions and lectures.
