Richard Johnston Inn Review

Two 18th-century brick row houses are joined to form this elegantly restored inn across busy Caroline Street from the visitor center. The downstairs sitting rooms and dining room, where breakfast is served (continental during the week, full on weekends), are invitingly furnished. The Oriental rugs and mahogany furniture in the second-floor rooms in one house create a more formal atmosphere than in the others, which feature rockers and four-poster beds that lend a country charm. Third-floor dormer rooms are attractive, with low ceilings, dormer windows, and murals on their walls. The inn's original kitchen house also exudes charm, with brick floors, two queen-size beds, and a private entrance from the courtyard. The spacious Isabella's Suite also offers a private courtyard entrance as well as two queen-size beds, a kitchenette, and a separate living room. The Loft Suite apartment overlooking the courtyard also has a kitchenette and has a king-size bed in its loft. The two courtyard rooms here are pet-friendly, although you cannot leave pets unattended.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
