Frommer's Review

In 1999, Donna Evans opened On the Pond, about 15 minutes west of Fredericton, with the idea of creating a comfortable retreat where guests could be pampered with spa treatments after indulging in soft adventures at the adjacent provincial park and surrounding countryside. The lodge is lovely, constructed in a sort of William Morris-inspired style with dark wood trim, slate floors in the entryways, and fieldstone fireplaces. The two downstairs common rooms -- one with a wood fireplace and one lined with bookshelves -- invite lingering and chatting with other guests. Upstairs guest rooms each feature a queen and a double bed, and are slightly larger than the average hotel room, with nice extras such as bathrobes and duvets. The basement spa includes two massage rooms, a hot tub, a sauna, an aesthetics room (offering manicures, pedicures, and facials), and a fitness center. Keeping with the theme, heart-healthy meals are served in the Parkview Dining Room daily from 6:30am to 11pm.

The lodge sits on "The Arm" -- an impoundment of the Saint John River behind the nearby hydroelectric dam -- in a marshy setting that's better for bird-watching than swimming. There's a small wharf here, with canoes, kayaks, and bikes that guests may use for free. Also nearby are a golf course and the Kings Landing Historical Settlement . Beach swimming is available across the road at the provincial park.

Facilities:
Dining room; spa; Jacuzzi; sauna; watersports equipment

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
