Beaverbrook Art Gallery

This absolutely stunning gallery, just steps from the Historic Garrison District, is easily the best art museum in the Maritimes, and home to an extensive collection of British paintings, including works by Reynolds, Gainsborough, Constable, and Turner. Major renovations in recent years have greatly expanded the museum, adding an additional 23, 000 square feet including a café, a large gift shop with unique local souvenirs, and more exhibit space overall.  Antique buffs gravitate to the rooms with period furnishings and early decorative arts, while others find themselves drawn to Salvador Dalí’s massive painting, entitled Santiago El Grande. The secret to fully appreciating the power of this work is to lie on the floor before it and look up; gallery staff encourages it. This gallery is especially strong when showing the art of First Nations (native Canadian) artists.
