Attractions

Füssen's main attraction is the Hohes Schloss, Magnusplatz (tel. 08362/903164), one of the finest late-Gothic castles in Bavaria. It was once the summer residence of the prince-bishops of Augsburg. Inside you can visit the Rittersaal or "Knight's Hall," known for its stunning coffered ceiling. There's also a collection of Swabian artwork from the 1400s to the 1700s. The castle is open April to October Tuesday to Sunday 11am to 4pm, with hours reduced from November to March to 2 to 4pm. Admission costs 3€ ($4.80) for adults, free for children 13 and under.

Immediately below the castle lies the 8th-century St. Mangkirche and its abbey (tel. 08362/6190), which was founded by the Benedictines and grew up on the site where St. Magnus died in 750. In the 18th century it was reconstructed in the baroque style, and in 1803 it was secularized. Free tours of the abbey are given July to September on Tuesday and Thursday at 4pm and on Saturday at 10:30am; in May, June, and October the schedule is Tuesday at 4pm and Saturday at 9:30am; and from January to April tours are on Saturday at 10:30am. In November and December, you might be able to arrange a tour by contacting the tourist office.

Within the abbey complex, signs point the way to the Chapel of St. Anne, where you can view the macabre Totentanz or "dance of death," painted by an unknown local artist in the early 15th century. It has a certain uncanny fascination. The chapel is open April to October Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm, and November to March Tuesday to Sunday 1 to 4pm. Admission is free. Nearby is the Museum of Füssen (Heimatmuseum; tel. 08362/903145), which displays artifacts relating to the history and culture of the region, including a collection of musical instruments. It keeps the same hours as the chapel and charges 2.55€ ($4.10) to enter.

The principal shopping spot in town is the Reichenstrasse, which was known in Roman times as the Via Claudia. This cobblestone street is flanked with houses from the Middle Ages, most of which have towering gables.
