Frommer's Review
The motto of Stravaigin, which roughly translates from the Scottish vernacular to "wanderin'" in English, is "think global, eat local." While the basement restaurant here is an award-wining enterprise, the ground level pub/cafe, with its recently expanded balcony, offers less expensive but still memorable food. Every afternoon and evening, people squeeze in for a drink and a meal. Scottish produce gets international twists: for example, cheese and herb fritters with sweet chile sauce or roast lamb served with coriander couscous. But there are also staples such as hearty fish and chips. The atmosphere is always cordial, and prices are lower still during the busy pretheater seating. If you like Stravaigin, you might consider its sister bistro near Byres Rd., called appropriately enough, Stravaigin 2 (Ruthven Lane; tel. 0141/334-7156).
