The House for an Art Lover is a creation by contemporary builders and architects working with some very basic drawings left by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. It is a testament to the architect's latent popularity that this pile was built so many years after his demise. In addition to being a stop for hardcore Mackintosh fans, it also is home for a popular cafe. Next to the gift shop is a stylish, ivory-colored dining room with arching windows that look out on to the gardens. The cafe's modern Scottish cuisine -- dishes such as salad of seared scallops, black pudding, and crisp pancetta -- is occasionally inspired, and the place at lunchtime on the weekend is rarely less than full.
