Elite Park Avenue Hotel ReviewAfter more than half a century in business, this hotel is once again a prestige address, even though it still lacks a certain character. Built in 1950, and radically renovated in 2005 and 2006 after its takeover by Sweden's Elite Hotel Group, this 10-story contemporary hotel stands as a highly visible fixture on the city's most central boulevard. With a pedigree that attracted, under different ownership, Henry Kissinger, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and David Rockefeller, it earned a new lease on life and a shot of additional glamour after its most recent reconfiguration. Its midsize-to-spacious bedrooms are attractive and comfortable, with tile or marble-trimmed bathrooms and lots of contemporary comforts. We go for the rooms on the upper floors because they have the most panoramic views of the water and the cityscape itself. On the premises are a restaurant, the Park Avenue Cafe; a bistro; and a second branch of a cozy English/Irish pub, the Bishop's Arms, whose clone (which lies in the cellar of this hotel's affiliate, the also-recommended Elite Plaza Hotel) is separately recommended in "Where to Dine," later in this chapter. A few steps from the hotel's entrance is the popular nightclub the Madison, which is loosely affiliated with this hotel. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
