Our favorite restaurant in Graz is in a five-story 1751 building of pink stucco and green shutters. Window boxes bursting with flowers adorn its exterior, while the interior is a fantasy of rustic artifacts and Styrian folklore. Managed by the hardworking Patterer family, it's the oldest inn in Graz, with three dining rooms on three different floors. There's also an outdoor terrace near the garden for warm-weather dining.

The menu lists a flavorful choice of Austrian dishes, all well prepared. Specialties include prosciutto with melon, very fresh salads, pasta, calamari, tafelspitz, several kinds of schnitzels (including a version with ham and cheese), several kinds of fish (including zander in Riesling sauce), and grilled beefsteaks. In the autumn, wild game dishes such as venison appear on the menu. The onion-flavored roast beef is a perennial favorite, and gourmets flock here for the fresh trout, which is grilled perfectly in its natural juices and served without sauce.
