If you're interested in visiting a working farm, check out this hacienda. Although not as historic or traditional as the haciendas found in the central and northern highlands, this large estate covers over 300 hectares (741 acres). Some of the land is devoted to growing cacao, mangos, and hardwoods, but there are also large tracts of primary and secondary forests. The tour takes you through the process of harvesting and processing cacao, as well as the making of chocolate. Lunch is served on the grounds of the hacienda, which is a mostly modern building with a couple of towers at the entrance made to resemble those of an ancient castle, or castillo. Horseback riding is offered, and they actually have some luxury rooms for rent.
