Bosone Palace

This 14th century palace counted Dante among its esteemed guests. (He stayed here after getting booted out of Florence on trumped-up embezzlement charges.) The hotel still evokes the feeling of Dante's era. Splurge on one of the Renaissance suites, which have 17th-century frescoes. (Try for no. 212, which has the larger bathroom and frescoes in both rooms.) Even if you opt for the standard doubles, you aren't sacrificing. The breakfast room sports 18th-century grotesques and stuccoes. The hotel's official restaurant isn't the recommendable Bosone Garden underneath, but the Taverna del Lupo, a few blocks downhill.
