Lou's has been a Hanover institution since 1947, attracting hungry, hung-over hordes of students for breakfast on the weekends and a steady local clientele of working folk dropping by for eggs or lunch during the week. The look is no-frills New Hampshire, with a black-and-white linoleum checkerboard floor, maple-and-vinyl booths, and a harried but efficient crew of waiters setting the tone. Breakfast is served all day (real maple syrup on your pancakes costs extra -- go ahead and splurge), and the sandwiches, served on fresh-baked bread, are huge and good. Locals pop in after the dining room closes in the late afternoon; while the staff preps for the next morning's rush, you can buy baked goods (if any are left) until 5pm.
