Hotel Victoria Review

This little business-class hotel (ca. 1928) is open, but will probably be closed for a lengthy period while being transformed into Cuba's first designer hotel. British company Esencia Hotels & Resorts will reopen the new hotel in late spring 2009. Conran & Partners will design the interiors of the rooms, restaurant, bar, and swimming pool terrace. The refurbished hotel will feature a larger restaurant, cocktail bar, and a guests-only bar. Rooms will feature Wi-Fi, a built-in plasma screen, sound system, and desk-drawer humidor, among other facilities. The hotel will also have a gym as well as health and beauty treatments.

The current hotel in 2008 is a small, attractive business hotel close to the action in Vedado. Be careful here: The neighboring FOCSA building funnels the sea breezes right at the Victoria's entrance. When the winds are up, they can almost knock you off your feet.

Facilities:
Restaurant; snack bar; bar; lounge; small outdoor pool; concierge; tour desk; car-rental desk; small business center; 24-hr. room service; babysitting; laundry service

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
