Visitor Information -- The Karlovac Tourist Office (tel. 047/615-115; fax 047/600-602) is located at Petra Zrinskog 3, diagonally across from the Hotel Carlstadt. Hours are 8am to 3pm Monday through Friday; 8am to 1pm Saturday; closed Sunday and holidays. A helpful staff, including a few who speak English, can direct visitors to hotels and private accommodations and provide maps and brochures about the city and surrounding areas. Commercial tourist agencies like Generalturist at Zrinski Trg 4 (tel. 047/615-199; fax 047/615-398) can help you with excursions from Karlovac and can help book rooms for you in town or at other destinations.
Getting There -- Karlovac is a little more than an hour from Zagreb by car on the Zagreb-Rieka autocesta (A6). Buses and trains run to and from Zagreb with regularity almost every half-hour. In addition, there is connecting service to Rijeka and some of the Kvarner islands. Train service to and from Zagreb runs with the frequency of a commuter line (18 per day). There also is connecting train service to Rijeka.
Getting Around -- Karlovac is a walker's city, especially along the river and in the town center. You can follow the "star," which is lined with trees and a popular promenade, especially after dinner. You can even walk up to the medieval Dubovac Castle by setting out north from the Kupa, but this is a vigorous uphill hike and will take half an hour or more. There is a road for auto traffic to the castle, too.
