In addition to the choices here, there are plenty of fried-fish joints and several options that go beyond the usual takeout fare. On Route 1 in Kittery, not far north of the island bridge to Portsmouth, the Beach Pea Baking Co. (tel. 207/439-3555) turns out outstanding sandwiches, breads, and pastries. Eat at one of the tables outside or on the front porch. It's open until 6pm (closed Sun).
York Village harbors a good little Italian family restaurant with atmosphere, Fazio's (tel. 207/363-7019), at 38 Woodbridge Rd. (turn just before the town library). Directly on Long Sands in York Beach, Sun & Surf (tel. 207/363-2961) has a takeout window proffering fried seafood and ice cream -- but also a dining room with standout ocean views and an increasingly sophisticated menu that now incorporates steaks, salads, pastas, tuna, and lamb.
If you're hankering for nothing more complicated than simple Chinese takeout, have no fear. Chun Ping Lau (tel. 207/439-6055) is a friendly little place, just north of the Kittery outlets on Route 1, serving amazingly inexpensive Cantonese and Szechuan combo plates of mapo tofu, cashew chicken, egg rolls, and the like.
