Union Bluff Hotel ReviewWith its stumpy turrets, dormers, and prominent porches, the Union Bluff has the look of an old-fashioned, 19th-century beach hotel; it's a surprise to learn it was only built in 1989. Inside, the hotel is a generic-modern building; rooms have oak furniture, wall-to-wall carpeting, and small refrigerators. Step outside and you're 10 seconds from the Short Sands beach, downtown T-shirt and shell shops, and bowling alley and game arcade (great for kids). There are also about 20 rooms in a motel annex next door, but stick with the main inn for the prime rooms and views; the best units are the suites on the top floor, which have beach vistas (and some have Jacuzzis or fireplaces). There's also a simple wood-paneled lounge and a restaurant on site. It's amazing how low the rates plummet here mid-week and off-season, when the hotel becomes among the most inexpensive places to stay in all of southern Maine. Also remember that parking is pretty tight on this hotel's little street; RVers will need to park their rigs in the public pay lot adjacent. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
