Shopping

The capital of Carinthia might surprise you with its quiet sense of prosperity and genteel good taste. Many of the interesting shops lie beside the Bahnhofstrasse and the pedestrian-only streets that radiate outward from the Alterplatz. Among the most appealing shops, you'll find Kastner & Öhler, Priesterhausg 7 (tel. 0463/56568), where you'll see virtually every piece of equipment you'd need for the pursuit of sports in any season.

Kärntner Heimatwerk, Herrengasse 2 (tel. 0463/55575), is housed on the street level of a pink-and-white baroque building in the center of town. It offers the best collection of locally made handicrafts in Klagenfurt. Merchandise includes a selection of embroidery, ceramics, wrought iron, glassware, and textiles sold by the meter. It's open Monday to Friday 8:30am to 6pm, and Saturday 8:30am to noon.
