Planning a Trip

Visitor Information -- The folks in Korcula Town's tourist office are very courteous and helpful. With a little notice, they will gladly help bewildered tourists and will sometimes even arrange for guides. Their office is next door to the Hotel Korcula at Obala Dr. Franje Tumana bb (tel. 020/715-701; www.korcula.net). Marco Polo Tours is the main agent for excursions on and from Korcula and for accommodations on the island. You can buy books and maps on Korcula there. Their office right on the dock opens at 8am and closes from 1:30 to 2pm. It opens again until 8pm. You can rent a scooter or jet ski next door to Marco Polo at Rent-a-Scooter (tel. 091/7877-754), open from 8am to 8pm daily. Kantun Tours (tel. 020/715-622; www.kantun-tours.com) across the street from Marco Polo offers Internet access and luggage storage, and arranges tours. Atlas Travel also rents cars, but it is a good idea to reserve ahead, as their inventory is limited.

Getting There -- Korcula is linked to Split by speedy catamarans and ferries, each of which makes the round-trip once per day. A few ferries serve Korcula from nearby Orebic, with pedestrians landing at Korcula Town and car ferries landing at Vela Luka more than a mile from there. There is also daily bus service from Dubrovnik via the car ferry. For ferry information, contact the Jadrolinija office in Korcula Town at tel. 020/715-410. It is open from 8am to 8pm Tuesday through Thursday; and from 8am to 9pm Monday, from 8am to 1pm Saturday, and from 6am to 2pm Sunday. Ferry service runs from Orebic through Mediteranska Plovidba in Orebic at tel. 020/711-156. Bus schedule and fare information can be obtained at the Korcula Town bus station (tel. 020/711-216).

Getting Around -- Local buses make five runs daily from one end of the island to the other. You can also rent a bike and easily pedal the 6km (4 miles) between Korcula Town and Lumbarda (where the best beaches are). At its widest point, Korcula is about 8km (5 miles) wide and less than 32km (20 miles) long.
