There are only four hotels within the walls, so unless you book ahead you may have to make do with one of the bland modern joints (though full of amenities) near the train station. These include the Rex, Piazza Ricasoli 19 (tel. 0583-955-443; fax 0583-954-348; www.hotelrexlucca.com), where doubles run 85€ to 120€ ($115-$156), and the Moderno, Via V. Civitali 38 (tel. 0583-55-840; fax 0583-53-830; www.albergomoderno.com), where doubles cost 65€ ($85).
Another economical option is the Ostello S. Frediano, Via della Cavallerizza (tel. 0583-469-957; fax 0583-461-007; www.ostellolucca.it). It has 140 beds in 20 multibed rooms and eight mini-apartments sleeping six. The cost is 18€ ($24) per day for a bunk in a multibed room. Space in the mini-apartments is 48€ ($63) for two people, 70€ ($91) for three, and 92€ ($119) for four. Lock-out is noon to 3:30pm; curfew is at midnight.
If you have 1,180€ to 2,951€ ($1,534-$3,836) to spare, you can buy a night in one of the 10 sumptuous suites of the Locanda Elisa, Via Nuova per Pisa 1952 (tel. 0583-379-737; fax 0583-379-019; www.relaischateaux.fr), about 5km (3 miles) south of town, with all the amenities: a beautifully landscaped pool and fine restaurant in a glass gazebo. Considerably less expensive are the 260€ ($338) doubles.
