A huge rambling hotel that since 1857 has hosted luminaries such as John Ruskin, the Universo is installed in a 15th-century palace across the square from Lucca's premier opera house/theater. No two rooms are alike -- though refurbishments have begun to standardize the accommodations. There are still a few decorative holdovers from the 1960s, but most rooms have renovated bathrooms (waffle towels, alas) and generally pleasant, if lackluster, built-in furnishings. The majority are carpeted and have heavy curtains framing the windows. The few rooms that tend toward the tiny side are decorated with floral-print fabrics in a charming country style.
