Frommer's Review
Opened in 1993, this is Macau's most stunning luxury resort hotel (though resorts slated to open in 2007 and beyond will surely eclipse it), complete with beautifully landscaped grounds, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a health club with free yoga, aerobics, tai chi, and other exercise classes, excellent restaurants, and Macau's first golf course (accessed from the top floor of the resort). Located just a stone's throw from Hac Sa Beach on Colôane Island (with its popular Fernando's restaurant), it's a bit far from the center of town (about a 20-min. ride from the ferry pier on the hotel's complimentary shuttle bus, with departures every 30 min.), but the management is betting that most prospective guests are those who want to get away from it all. Families are catered to with a child-care center; Westin Kids' Club, which provides a multitude of activities for children; a wading pool; and a playground.
The hotel, Mediterranean in design and atmosphere, is spacious and airy, with a red terra-cotta tile roof and a comfortable lounge off the lobby that takes advantage of the idyllic setting by providing lots of windows that overlook the sea. Constructed in tiers to harmonize with the hillside overlooking Hac Sa Beach, each of the eight-storied hotel's very spacious, vibrantly colored rooms faces either the South China Sea or the beach (sea views are better) and features glass sliding doors opening onto -- I love this -- a huge 25-sq.-m (269-sq.-ft.) private terrace with plants and patio furniture (for real luxury, you can succumb to an outdoor Chinese-style massage here). For guests who like to stay in shape, there are WestinWORKOUT rooms with exercise equipment. Roomy bathrooms have everything from shaving/makeup mirrors to separate tubs and shower stalls. Room rates are based on altitude, with the highest floors costing more. If all the development on COTAI makes you cringe, this isolated resort is the place for you.
Facilities: 3 restaurants (Cantonese, Japanese, international); bar; lounge; outdoor swimming pool open year-round; outdoor children's pool; indoor pool; 18-hole golf course; golf-driving range; minigolf course; 8 outdoor floodlit tennis courts; basketball court; croquet; jogging lanes, health club and spa; indoor and outdoor Jacuzzis; solarium; rental bikes; children's day-care center; Westin's Kids Club (ages 4-12) and playground; game room; small 24-hr. business center with free access to the Internet; 24-hr. room service; massage; babysitting; same-day laundry service/dry cleaning.
