You're performing a good deed by staying here, since this hostelry is run by students attending the adjacent Institute for Tourism Studies, but you're by no means sacrificing comfort. Located above the old town on a hill once dominated by a fortress, this pousada offers simple but traditionally decorated rooms (all nonsmoking), with carved wooden headboards and all the usual amenities. After breakfast (included in hotel rates, which do not have a tax or service charge since this is a government-owned facility), be sure to roam through campus grounds with an herb garden used by the Institute's student-run restaurant and the adjacent park on old fortress grounds. Although a bit far from the usual action (you should take a taxi from the ferry terminal since it's an uphill climb from the bus stop), Kun Iam Temple and Red Market are within walking distance. This is surely one of Macau's best-kept secrets.
