The Best Mid-Range Hotels

Built in 1966 and still going strong, the reasonably priced Ayre Gran Hotel Colón (tel. 91-573-59-00) is west of Retiro Park in a relatively safe area of Madrid that's easily connected to the center by subway. It's well maintained and kept up-to-date, offering well-designed bedrooms with comfortably traditional furnishings.

Ideally located in a popular tiny square close the Plaza Mayor the 19th century Hostal Persal (tel. 91-369-46-43) offers particularly good value, family-size rooms as well as fine on-the-spot meals.

If the prospect of a peaceful setting within easy reach of the center tickles your fancy then the Residencia El Viso (tel. 91-564-03-70) is the place for you. Comfortable rooms, friendly atmosphere, and a leafy patio where you can enjoy home-cooked meals are all part of the deal.
