Café de Oriente

The ever popular Oriente is one of the most beautifully located cafe-restaurants. From its terrace tables there's a spectacular view past statue-lined gardens of the Palacio Real (Royal Palace). The dining rooms -- Castilian upstairs, French Basque downstairs -- are regularly frequented by royalty and diplomats. Typical of the refined cuisine are vichyssoise, fresh vegetable flan, and many savory meat and fresh-fish offerings. Service is excellent. Most visitors try to get an outdoor table, though on cloudy winter days the interior, decorated in turn-of-the-20th-century style, with banquettes and regal paneling, is equally inviting. Pizza, tapas, and drinks (including Irish, Viennese, Russian, and Jamaican coffees) are served.
