Hostal la Macarena

While still retaining its marvelous 19th-century Belle Epoque facade and original character -- the creaky old elevator is as slow as ever -- this perennial Madrid favorite has been nicely renovated in most other aspects by its new owners, Hostales Sil & Serranos. The small- to medium-sized rooms all have neat new furnishings, comfortable beds, and pristine bathrooms with sliding-glass panels for the shower area. Inner rooms are quieter (this is a popular after-dark area), but those with windows facing the street have double panes to keep the noise to a minimum. The hostal is on a street just below the eastern side of the Plaza Mayor near an array of cavelike mesones.
