Frommer's Review
Regular visitors who used to patronize the now-disbanded Hotel París on the other side of the Puerta del Sol can now stay at this sister establishment in the newly pedestrianized Calle Arenal, just a short stroll away from Opera square, the Plaza Mayor, and other attractions of the historic Austrias district. It's a genial homely place that's been around for some time, and its laidback atmosphere is a welcome reminder of the less frenetic Madrid of yesteryear. The decor is neat but unostentatious, and the clean and comfortable rooms are rated standard or superior (the latter being worth that little extra in summer as they alone have air-conditioning). If you prefer relative peace and quiet to the nonstop cacophony of city life, ask for an interior room. The Francisco has been run by the same family for many years and the staff is very friendly and obliging.
