Villa Padierna/Thermas de Carratraca Hotel & Spa ReviewThroughout the Franco era and for a few years into the millennium, this once-imperial villa had functioned as a low-rent inn, with an impeccable historic pedigree but without any pretensions of glamour. (It had originally been built in 1830 by Ferdinand VII for the entertainment of guests who included, among others, the Empress Eugénie.) All of that changed in 2007 when it reopened as a government-rated five-star deluxe enclave. In the center of this small spa town (pop. 1,000), with direct access to the healing waters of the source favored by the ancient Romans and the Arab caliphs who replaced them, it retained many of the architectural grace notes of its original construction, including the antique wooden doors. The posh boutique hotel is now outfitted with plush furniture inspired by late-19th-century French style. Many guests opt for at least some of the spa treatments with waters from the springs. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
