Frommer's Review
The South's finest collection of French and American Impressionist and post-Impressionist artworks is the highlight of this exquisite museum, set on 17 wooded acres. The museum, art collection, and surrounding 17 acres of formal and informal gardens once belonged to Margaret and Hugo Dixon, who were avid art collectors. After the deaths of the Dixons, their estate opened to the public as an art museum and has since become one of Memphis's most important museums. The permanent collection includes works by Henri Matisse, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, Mary Cassatt, J. M. W. Turner, and John Constable. With strong local support, the museum frequently hosts temporary exhibits of international caliber. Twice a year, the Memphis Symphony Orchestra performs outdoor concerts in the Dixon's formal gardens. Allow an hour for the museum, and more time for the gardens.
