African slaves did the back-breaking labor of picking the cotton, while in downtown Memphis, wealthy merchants and brokers bought and sold the lucrative commodity that was loaded onto Mississippi River barges for shipment to the entire world. This interesting museum, on the site of the 1939 Memphis Cotton Exchange building, features exhibits that explore cotton's legacy and its importance to Memphis's growth.
