Frommer's Review
What's so much fun about dining at the Inn at Hunt Phelan is how cozy and welcome you can feel in such a grand, storied place. The restaurant -- made up of a collection of small dining rooms on the first floor of a restored 1828 antebellum mansion -- is a welcome retreat just outside the hustle of downtown Memphis. Inside the mansion, now a lovely B&B, the restaurant caters to both inn guests and outside visitors. On a recent visit here, the salad of artichokes, wild boar pancetta, and olive vinaigrette was a delightful beginning. The morel mushrooms with a grit cake, fava beans, and okra was rich and a nice tip of the hat to Southern food tradition, but the lamb with cous cous entree proved that the chef is definitely not living in the past. An impressive dessert and wine list round out the menu -- your waiter will be happy to make recommendations, should you not know where to begin. If you'd rather sit outside than inside, consider dining at the more laid-back Veranda Grill, which offers the entire menu from the restaurant in addition to more low-tech food, ranging from a BLT to a burger to a cheese plate. The Veranda Grill is located behind the inn in the back garden, an ideal spot on a comfortable Tennessee evening. If you're eating indoors, at least have a drink out back before moving inside. The friendly bartender will gladly prepare a unique, not to be forgotten (unless you have one too many, that is) cocktail for you.
