Montorio Review

Founded on a lark by two sisters in 2000, these five spacious mini-apartments sit atop a hill overlooking the Tempio di San Biagio and the Sienese countryside just outside Montepulciano's walls. All save the smallest of the sumptuously homey accommodations combine the best of countryside tradition with modern amenities such as full kitchens, complimentary wine upon arrival (everything in the stocked minifridges is free as well); the smallest unit is more like a suite with a kitchenette. The only drawbacks: Montorio is a stiff 20-minute walk uphill into town, and no children under 10 are allowed. They've also completed renovations on the Villa Poggiano (tel. 0578-758-292; www.villapoggiano.com), which is exceptionally quiet and has views of sheep-dotted hillsides 1.6km (1 mile) along the road to Pienza. It now boasts 10 enormous suites, inheriting the wildly dramatic and elegant touches of its 1930s owner. Either property makes a perfect base for exploring southern Tuscany.

Facilities:
Bike rental; concierge; room service

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
