While you will find reminders of the past all around you in the Altstadt or Old Town of Munich, the city is by no means standing still or living off its past. The city has embarked on a building program that will transform its 20th-century skyline into a 21st-century look with lots of new office and commercial buildings. However, the historic core, which has zoning rules that forbid any building to rise higher than the spires of the city's symbol, the Frauenkirche cathedral, will remain relatively unchanged.
