This museum is a showcase for Munich's ever-expanding collection of modern art, catching a lot of the overflow from the Pinakothek der Moderne. The paintings and sculptures attract visitors from all over Germany, as well as from abroad. Udo and Anette Brandhorst, whose bequests form the nucleus of the collection, also had a great interest in literature. The exhibits reflect that, including 112 original editions of books illustrated by Picasso. Other world-famed artists are also represented by illustrations on paper, including works by Joan Miró. Groups of works by European artists from the second half of the 20th century as well as works by international contemporary artists are imaginatively arranged. There are more than 60 works by Cy Twombly -- paintings, sculptures, and drawings. Andy Warhol is represented by a plethora of works from his various creative phrases, and a collection of some of the biggest names in European art today, including Damien Hirst, is also exhibited. The museum holds the largest and most impressive collection of the art of a famous American, Alex Katz.
