Negril Hills Golf Club, Sheffield Road (tel. 876/957-4638), is Negril's only golf course. Although it doesn't have the cachet of such Montego Bay courses as Tryall, it's your only choice in western Jamaica. The 91-hectare (225-acre) course lies in the foothills of Negril at Sheffield, 5km (3 miles) east of the resort. The course is known for its water hazards and undulating fairways. This is one place where if your ball goes into the water, you shouldn't try to retrieve it -- unless you want to fight a crocodile for it. On-site are a restaurant (the food is mediocre) and pro shop. Greens fees for this 18-hole, par-72 course are $58, and club rental is $18. Carts and caddies, which are not obligatory, cost $35 and $14, respectively. Anyone can play, but advance reservations are recommended before 7am.
