Frommer's Review
Artful, funky, and permeated with a sense of whimsy and fun, this boutique inn stands in stark contrast to hedonistic all-inclusive resorts like Sandals, and it offers very affordable rates. Scattered along a cliff-edged stretch of coastline that took massive amounts of labor to tame, it's a cross between a South Seas island retreat and an African village, with a distinct sense of international hip and low-key media glamour. A team of enterprising young Australians restored and expanded this place, which was one of Negril's first hotels (the Rolling Stones hung out here in the 1970s). Accommodations are simple stone-and-timber cottages, scattered along a winding series of pathways atop the cliffs. Each has a ceiling fan, a queen-size four-poster bed draped in mosquito netting, an open-air shower, and a romantic emphasis on flickering candles and moonlit views of the sea. Four cottages have sleeping lofts with extra queen-size beds. Less than half a kilometer (1/4 mile) from the beach, Rockhouse has a ladder that extends down to a rock-edged cove where you can swim and snorkel. The in-house Rockhouse Restaurant is one of the most appealing parts of this hip and in its own, understated way, elegant hotel.
