Frommer's Review

Billing itself as a "super-inclusive" resort, the Grand Lido sits on a landscaped 8.9-hectare (22-acre) stretch of beachfront that's immediately adjacent to the more raucous Hedonism II. Although it is touted as the most upscale of Jamaica's SuperClubs resorts, it sometimes falls a bit below expectations. The "contemporary Jamaican-style" lobby might seem a bit impersonal, and some readers have claimed that the place lacks good service. But SuperClubs has done a lot to overcome that, and things, we think, are getting better, especially since the management of SuperClubs is heavily invested in the site as the chain's flagship. And it has also won many awards from organizations that include Condé Nast and AAA.

Rooms are sun-flooded and comfortable, each with a vaguely Hispanic/Mediterranean theme. Each is relatively spacious, containing either a patio or a balcony that (except for a few) overlooks the beach. Most units are split-level, with CD players, king or twin beds, and large bathrooms with tubs and showers. The elegant hardwood furniture in the rooms was handmade in Jamaica. In addition to a cavernous main dining room, there are five additional "specialty" restaurants serving, among others, Japanese food (in Munasan), casual Italian food (in the Cafe Lido), Jamaican/Caribbean food (in the Reggae Café), and upscale Italian food (in Piacere). Guests can also sample a late-night disco, piano bar, pool tables, and nine bars. Note that the smaller of the resort's two beaches is reserved for nudists; if you're particular about who you'd like to see going around nude, or if you dislike views of nude bathers altogether, ask for a "swimwear-side" unit. Children are not allowed on the grounds of this resort: only couples and singles over 16 years old.

Facilities: 6 restaurants; 9 bars; 2 pools; 4 tennis courts; gym; health club; spa facility w/many options for massage outdoors; 4 Jacuzzis; sauna; pool tables; business center; salon; 24-hr. room service; laundry service; nonsmoking rooms; rooms for those w/limited mobility; disco.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
