One of the Plantation Inns of Nevis, the Montpelier stands in the hills, 210m (689 ft.) high, with grandstand views of the ocean. The 18th-century plantation is in the center of its own 12-hectare (30-acre) estate, which contains 4 hectares (10 acres) of ornamental gardens surrounding the cottage units. Admiral Horatio Nelson married Frances Nisbet at this historic sugar plantation back in 1787. Accommodations are generally spacious and brightened with fresh flowers and luxuries like comfortable chairs and dressing tables. Tasteful fabrics in contemporary colors are used. The guest rooms contain bamboo tables and chairs, as well as mahogany writing desks and cedar wall closets. Today the look is one of minimalist chic, as befits the 21st century. Most of the elegant bedrooms have four-poster beds. Service is among the best on island. The staff will even unpack your clothing, press your garments, and put them away for you. Montpelier by the Sea is the hotel's private .8-hectare (2-acre) beach, featuring waterfront dining and beverages in an old Nevisian house.
