Frommer's Review
A respect for fine living prevails in this gracious estate house on a coconut plantation, which is the only plantation-style house that lives up to the grace notes of Montpelier Plantation Inn. This is the former home of Frances Nisbet, who, at the age of 22, married Lord Nelson. Although enamored of Miss Nisbet when he married her, Lord Nelson later fell in love with Lady Hamilton (as detailed in the classic film That Hamilton Woman). This is the only plantation hotel in Nevis that opens directly onto the beach -- a kilometer or so (1/2 mile) of pulverized coral sand against a backdrop of palm trees.
The present main building was rebuilt on the foundations of the original 18th-century great house. The ruins of a circular sugar mill stand at the entrance, covered with bougainvillea, hibiscus, and poinciana. Guest cottages are set in the palm grove. All rooms are brightly decorated and beautifully appointed, with king-size beds and firm mattresses. The bathrooms, with tub/shower combos, are tidily maintained. In 2006 the Nisbet completed a US$2 million renovation that included the guest rooms, the facilities at the beach, the fitness center, and the Great House. They also added a hot tub next to the pool at the beach.
In addition to two casual beachfront eateries, the Great House Restaurant serves some of the most elegant and best dinners on the island, a delightful combination of Caribbean and international cuisine.
