Oban offers a truly fine restaurant 10km (6 miles) south of town on the shores of Loch Feochan. Jenny and Colin Craig, a mother-and-son team, welcome you to their whitewashed Georgian house (the oldest part dates from 1592) and offer a choice of three dining rooms as well as a daily five-course meal. Salmon and halibut are smoked on the premises, and the menu relies heavily on Scottish produce, including fresh fish. Try the cock-a-leekie soup, followed by Sound of Luing scallops. The wine cellar is excellent, especially in its bordeaux.

The hotel rents 21 well-furnished rooms, charging £158 to £170 ($300-$323) per night for a double, with a suite costing £208 to £220 ($395-$418). A full Scottish breakfast is included in the rate.
