Coconuts Review

When cruise ships are moored in front of the Ocho Rios piers, a series of iron gates seem mysteriously to get unlocked, and disembarking passengers can stroll, unimpeded, from the ship's gangways along the water's edge to access this likable dining and drinking venue. Be warned, however, that the moment the cruise ships depart, gates along the waterfront seem to slam mysteriously shut, requiring access via the conventional city streets and roads. Regardless, this restaurant enjoys a reputation among local office workers, many of them long-established groups of women, as a suitable place to hang out with friends after work, chugging down a series of rum-based, party-colored cocktails, and perhaps rounding off the experience with a plate or two of food. It's not a bad idea, since items are flavorful and imaginative. Examples include surf and turf; Thai-style snapper filet; tamarind-glazed shrimp; and stewed fish in brown sauce. There are also burgers, Cajun-blackened fish filets, fajitas, filet mignons, oxtail soups, jerk chicken, and club sandwiches. A pair of English-colonial gazebos, jutting out into the harbor, provide visual distraction and touches of class.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
