At one time a bawdy collection of saloons, rooming houses, brothels, and opium dens, Ogden's 25th Street has become the "in" place to shop and eat. Among its historic buildings, you'll find several antiques shops, specialty stores, restaurants, and bars. Among our favorite stops here are the Pan Handler, 260 25th St. (tel. 801/392-6510), where you'll find all sorts of kitchenware. Needlepointers should make a point of visiting the Needlepoint Joint, 241 25th St. (tel. 801/394-4355). Also worth a look are Gallery 25, 268 Historic 25th St. (tel. 801/334-988), a co-operative gallery featuring the work of local artists; Umé, 186 Historic 25th St. (tel. 801/393-7326), a hip boutique for women; and Ruby & Begonia, an eclectic art and home decor center, 204 Historic 25th St. (tel. 801/334-7829).
At the mouth of Ogden Canyon is Rainbow Gardens, 1851 Valley Dr. (tel. 801/621-1606); dubbing itself as Utah's largest gift shop, it has everything from flowers and Olympic souvenirs to a restaurant and a trail head out back.
Those searching for specialty shops or their favorite stores will enjoy Newgate Mall, 36th Street and Wall Avenue (tel. 801/621-1161; www.newgatemall.com), with its boutiques, department stores, abundant eateries, and 14-screen movie theater. Mall tenants include Dillard's, Mervyn's, Sears, Gart Sports, Gap, Victoria's Secret, Bath & Body Works, Eddie Bauer, Spencer Gifts, Radio Shack, and Foot Locker. The mall is open Monday through Saturday from 10am to 9pm and Sunday from 11am to 7pm.
