The Oaks Review

This restaurant's delightful location -- tucked among the pines in Ogden Canyon, with patio dining over the bubbling and crashing Ogden River -- just can't be beat. The Oaks moved to its present spot way back in 1933, when it evolved into a hamburger and hot dog takeout joint. In 1981, Keith and Belinda Rounkles turned it into a full-service sit-down eatery and ice-cream parlor. Today, the family-friendly, home-style eatery has a rugged Western decor, accented by old photos, maps, and postcards. Food is good, solid, American fare, made mostly from scratch. Breakfast, served until noon, features the usuals, along with huevos rancheros and some exotic omelets. The lunch and dinner menus bring a variety of burgers and sandwiches, including the house specialty: sliced sirloin smothered with mushrooms, onions, and green peppers and topped with mozzarella and American cheese, served on a French bun. Dinner specials, such as charbroiled steak, bison rib-eye, chicken, or salmon, are also available; the pasta of the day is available at lunch and dinner. Utah microbrews and other beers are served with meals.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
