The items you haul back from Öland will probably involve either durable clothing suitable for nature walks in the rugged outdoors, or local handicrafts and pottery made by arts-oriented refugees from urban life. One of the most appealing outlets in the area for ceramics and pottery is Lotta & Mary, Hamnen, very close to the piers of Färjestaden (tel. 0485/318-81; www.checkpoint-oland.com), where the idiosyncratic and painstakingly crafted ceramics of a team of local artisans are displayed and sold. Nearby, at Atelje Ölandssnipan, Hamnplan, Färjestaden (tel. 0485/319-95), some of the most artfully crafted miniature ship models in Sweden are displayed, each authentic to one or another of the many vessels that have sought shelter in Öland's harbor.
A collection of antiques is stockpiled and sold at Antikgården, Salomonstorp, in the hamlet of Köpingsvik (tel. 0485/727-83; www.antikgarden.com).
