Ottenby Naturum

At the southern tip of Öland sits this exhibition of nature and culture, one of the best bird-watching sites anywhere in Sweden. The few "birdies" we know in this far-northern landscape appreciate Ottenby for its ornithological station, which conducts research. The surrounding area was an ancient park and the hunting ground of kings. In the 16th century, King Johan III stocked the park with fallow deer, and the strain still thrives here; today, you can still see the coast-to-coast wall built by King Karl X Gustaf in 1650 to fence off the deer and to improve hunting. The park is also the breeding ground for the rare golden oriole.
