Frommer's Review
For a fun time where you'll actually learn something, we heartily recommend this trip into the underworld. A mine train takes visitors 3,350 feet inside Gold Hill, to see where some $8 million in gold, $90 million in silver, and $5 million in other minerals have been mined since silver was discovered here in 1884. Guides, many of them former miners, explain the mining process and equipment and recount the various legends of the mine. Also on the property is an operating blacksmith shop, plus streams where you can learn the technique of gold panning ($6.95 extra). An outdoor cafe serves an all-you-can-eat breakfast until noon ($6 adults, $4 children under 12) and Texas-style barbecue all day ($4.50-$8). The mine temperature is a cool 50°F (10°C), so jackets are recommended, even in summer. Allow about 1 1/2 hours.
