Politeama Palace Hotel

This is a very appealing hotel, with lots of regional charm and enough touches of international modernity to make tour groups from northern Europe feel at home. Built in 1977, and set behind an angular concrete facade, it rises nine stories above a point immediately adjacent to one of Palermo's most architecturally distinctive theaters, the Politeama, in the heart of the stylish Via Libertà district. Inside, expect a contemporary decor of polished granite, hardwood, leather, and Italian moderno styling. The best rooms overlook the heroic bronze chariots on the nearby theater and the square that contains it. All units contain elaborate woodwork, gilt touches, original art, dignified friezes that evoke baronial life in 19th-century Sicily, and small- to medium-size tile or stone bathrooms. Some rooms have Jacuzzis as well.
